1. SAMNet and the PLEXTALK Pocket

  • Q.1-1
    I have a subscription to the System Access Mobile Network (SAMNet) from Serotek. Is the PLEXTALK Pocket among the supported portable devices to which I can transfer content?

    Yes. You can transfer audio-described movies, podcasts, blogs, forum messages and much more from your computer running SAMNet to your PLEXTALK Pocket.

    How do I transfer SAMNet content from my computer to my PLEXTALK Pocket?

    Transferring SAMNet content directly to your PLEXTALK Pocket is easy. First, turn off your Pocket and plug it in to your PC using the USB cable provided with your unit. Next, turn on the Pocket. You’ll be informed by both Windows and SAMNet that your unit has been connected. Next, find the content you’d like to transfer, and press the applications key or shift+f10 to bring up the context menu. Select "transfer to PLEXTALK Pocket" from this menu and your content will begin transferring immediately. When you’re done transferring content, you may disconnect your Pocket and your content will be available.

    Can I select content to transfer even if my Pocket isn’t currently connected?

    Yes. You can add any supported content to your sync list in SAMNet and transfer it the next time your unit is connected. First, find the content you’d like to transfer. Next, press the applications key or shift+f10 to access the context menu. Choose the "add to sync list" option from this menu, and the content you’ve selected will be added to the list of content to transfer the next time your unit is connected. When you’re ready to transfer content to your Pocket, simply connect to your PC, open the media library within SAMNet, choose the "sync list" option, and tab to the button labeled "transfer content to PLEXTALK Pocket. Once this button is pressed, your content will begin transferring immediately.

    I am not familiar with the System Access Mobile Network and I’d like to learn more. Can I get a trial of the product, and will I be able to transfer content to my Pocket during that trial?

    Yes, a 30-day trial of the System Access Mobile Network is available and you can transfer content to your Pocket during the trial. Please note that once your trial period has ended, all protected content such as audio-described movies will no longer play on your device. To set up a trial of SAMNet, start by visiting www.satogo.com and setting up a free account. Once you have been registered, you’ll begin your trial by installing System Access on your computer. Press modifier+f to open the System Access menu. Note that the modifier key can be insert, caps-lock, numpad 0, or scroll lock. From the System Access menu, press the letter A to access the "my account" section, and then follow the link entitled: "Install System Access on this computer." Once System Access is installed, you’ll be able to launch SAMNet with control+alt+n, or by choosing "connect to the System access Mobile Network" from the System Access menu.

2. Bookshare digital books, newspaper and magazines

    Can I play Bookshare books downloaded from their web site on my PLEXTALK Pocket?

    Yes. If you are an registered member of Bookshare, you can get digital books, newspaper and magazines at their web site. For more information about Bookshare membership, please go to Bookshare web site; http://www.bookshare.org/.

    I have registered as a Bookshare member. How can I get a book from Bookshare and play it on my Pocket?

    You can download and play a book, newspaper or magazines as DAISY format on Bookshare web site on your Pocket. But Bookshare provides the titles as a zip file, and first you will have to extract a file on your computer, then copy it in the zip file to your Pocket directly or to an SD card. For more information on finding and downloading Bookshare books, please go to Bookshare web site; http://www.bookshare.org/about/gettingStartedOverview
    1. Step 1: Download a file

      On Bookshare web site, please find a title input your username and password you have received from NLS, then log in. After login, please select a book or magazine you want to read. When you press or select ENTER button, you will be asked how you get the book on your computer. Please press or select ‘Save’, not ‘Open’. The following box will ask you to specify a location where you want to save the book. Please choose the location and press or select ‘Save’. Then your computer will start downloading a zip file containing the book you have chosen.

      Step 2: Unzip a file you have downloaded

      The Bookshare book, newspaper or magazine is in a zip file you have downloaded. Please unzip this file on your computer.

      1. Select the .zip book file.
      2. Then choose Extract All from the File menu.
      3. Finally choose a location for saving the files and enter your password.

      We recommend to make a new folder and save the files in the zip file.

      Step 3: Copy the book, newspaper or magazine from your PC

      Case 1: If you want to copy book or magazine to your Pocket via USB
      1. Please make sure to power off your Pocket. Then please connect Pocket to your PC using a long USB cable which was provided with Pocket in a gift box.
      2. Please power on your Pocket and your PC will recognize your Pocket, SD card in your Pocket exactly speaking, as a removable drive.
        Please copy the whole folder you made and save the files in the zip file to your Pocket. The folder will be saved on the SD card in your Pocket.
        Note: PLEASE MAKE SURE TO COPY THE FOLDER YOU MADE ON YOUR COMPUTER TO YOUR POCKET. IF YOU COPY THE FILES ON THE ROOT OF THE REMOVABLE DRIVE, PLEXTALK POCKET CAN NOT PLAY THE TITLE.
      3. After your PC complete to copy it, please remove this removable drive using Safely Remove Hardware provided on the Windows System Tray. After your PC announce you can safely remove it, please disconnect the USB cable from your Pocket and your Pocket will start to restart automatically.
      4. Now you can play the Bookshare title you have copied to your Pocket. Please just operate your Pocket as you select books on your SD card.
      Case 2: If you want to copy book or magazine to SD card inserted in card reader
      1. Please insert a SD card to an SD card reader and connect it to your computer.
      2. Please make sure that your computer have recognized this SD card as a removable drive.
      3. Please copy the whole folder you made and save the files in the zip file to your Pocket. The folder will be saved on the SD card in your Pocket.
        Note: PLEASE MAKE SURE TO COPY?THE FOLDER YOU MADE ON YOUR COMPUTER TO YOUR POCKET. IF YOU COPY THE FILES ON THE ROOT OF THE REVOVEBLE DRIVE, PLEXTALK POCKET CAN NOT PLAY THE TITLE.
      4. After your PC complete to copy it, please remove this removable drive using Safely Remove Hardware provided on the Windows System Tray. After your PC announce you can safely remove it, please insert the SD card into your Pocket and power it on.
      5. Now you can play the NLS book or magazine you have copied to your Pocket. Please just operate your Pocket as you select books on your SD card.

3. Network Folder Function

    What is Network Folder Function?

    PLEXTALK Pocket has wireless LAN capability. You can access an SD card in your PLEXTALK Pocket from your computer via wireless LAN as if the SD card is one of the folders on your computer. For example, you can drag and drop any files on your computer to the SD card without connecting your Pocket via USB.

    Can I connect my PLEXTALK Pocket with any wireless network, for example, in a hot spot of a hotel or an airport?

    PLEXTALK Pocket offers simple wireless connectivity for your home or office network,, where you do not need to input a password on a web browser like Internet Explorer. Hot spots that ask you to input passwords on a web browser can not be connected to your Pocket.

    How can I use the Network Folder Function?

    First of all, the firmware of your PLEXTALK Pocket must be version 4.04 or later. Please check the system version on your Pocket using the System Property selection of System Settings in the Menu system. For more information, please read the Pocket Tutorial NetworkFolder Mar2011.doc.

    What computer operation systems does this function support?

    The Utility Software supports Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. To access the Network folder of Pocket from Windows Vista and Windows 7, you need to configure the network security setting of Windows OS. For more details, please read Section 2 "Set LAN manager authentication level of windows PC" of the Pocket Tutorial NetworkFolder Mar2011.doc.

    What is LAN manager authentication level?

    This is one of the LAN security settings of Windows OS, particularly Windows Vista and 7. You have to change the network security policy of your Windows OS to access your PLEXTALK Pocket via a network. Technically speaking, you have to have your Windows accept NTLM response from a device on your network. You may need to contact your network administrator when you want to change this setting to connect your Pocket.
    You do not have to change this setting when you use Windows XP or 2000.

    File transfer error message shows up during file transfer to PTP1. Network connection is disconnected during file transfer. Did this break the SD card on my Pocket?

    When the network connection is cut during file transfer and Windows OS will pop up a error message, the file entry on a SD card may have been broken. This broken file entry has occupied a certain memory area of the SD card and decreases the size of vacant memory. If you want to erase this entry to get more vacant memory, you can try the ‘Check disk’ function on Windows OS. For more information about the Check disk function, please see 1.4 of NetworkFolder_Trouble_Shooting_Guide.doc. Otherwise, you must copy all the files on your SD card to your computer then try to format the SD card.

    After file transfer, it looks to me that SD card remaining size is wrong or smaller than I imagined. How can I check this?

    It seems that a file entry on a SD card has collapsed and has occupied a certain memory area of the SD card and decreased the size of vacant memory. If you want to erase this entry to get more vacant memory, you can try the ‘Check disk’ function on Windows OS. For more information about the Check disk function, please see NetworkFolder_Trouble_Shooting_Guide.doc. You must copy all the files on your SD card to your computer then try to format the SD card.

    A file I deleted is still shown in a network folder on my computer. How can I delete the file in a correct manner?

    We expect this can be ‘Read-only’ file. If you want to delete that file, first please right click or press the Shift key and F10 key together on that file to open the Properties dialog box. On the General tab of this dialog box, please clear the Read-only check box and click OK or Apply button. Now you have changed the Read-only attribute of that file. Then please try to delete this file in the network folder. This method is also applied when you want delete a folder in a network folder.

    How fast can I transfer a file on this Network Folder function?

    File transfer speed is about 2.5Mbit/sec (Windows XP. WPA2 AES) depending on environments.

    How long can I use the Network Folder with fully charged battery?

    The Network Folder function consume additional power. You can continue to transfer files between your Pocket and your computer for about four hours with a fully charged battery.

    I cannot log onto the Pocket even by using correct device name.

    Please confirm network connection between Pocket. Open CMD.exe and try ping command.
  • Please try ping with both the device name and IP address e.g. >ping.PTP1-1234 or .ping 127.127.2.107
  • If connecting, the command should show 4 packets sent and 4 received You can confirm the IP address of Pocket by "Confirm network information" option of the network setting menu.
  • If ping command fails, please cancel the Network Folder function and turn the power of Pocket off and on again. Then try the connection again.

    I cannot log onto the Pocket even by using correct device name. I have changed Network folder

    After changing Network folder name, user ID, password, you need to log off and log on the PC to refresh the network folder service of the PC.

    I cannot log onto the Pocket even by using correct device name. I am typing a device name only to open up the Pocket.

    To log on to Pocket, please type the device name and folder name of SD memory. For example, ¥¥PTP1-1234¥SDmemory.

    SD card remaining memory capacity is too small.

    If the file entry of the SD card is broken, it causes a reduction in the remaining size of the SD card. It is due to the broken file entry occupying available memory. If you notice the SD card remaining size is too small, please confirm the error of the SD card by using Check Disk function.

    How can I check an error on the SD card?

    Windows PC has a Check Disk function. It can confirm and recover the error of the SD card. Please refer to the section of Appendix "Check disk function" in this manual.

    A file that has been removed still shows in the Network folder.

    If the attribute of the file is Read Only, it cannot be deleted. Please confirm the property of the file, and remove the check of Read Only attribute.

4. USB Connection

    My computer does not identify my PLEXTALK Pocket that is connected via USB as a removable drive. How can I correct this?

    Please try the following methods:
    1. Make sure that your computer is Windows2000, XP, Vista or 7.
    2. First connect your Pocket to AC Adapter power and turn on your Pocket, then connect it to your computer via USB.
    3. Connect your Pocket to your computer directly if your Pocket is currently connected to a USB hub.
    4. If still not recognized, connect your Pocket to another USB port on your computer, if available.
    5. If still not recognized, use another USB cable to connect your Pocket to your computer.
    6. If you try all the above and still do not succeed it, please reboot your Pocket by either of the methods below. (These steps cause the embedded OS to restart.)
    1. After you turn off your Pocket with the Power Key and remove the AC adapter from it, please take your battery out of the battery box at the back side your Pocket, insert it again and press the Power Key to turn on your Pocket.
    2. While your Pocket is power on, please slide the Key Lock Key upward to lock the keys. After that, please press and hold the Power Key for more than ten seconds. When you release your finger from the Power Key, your Pocket will be turned off automatically. Then please slide the Key Lock Key downward to unlock the keys and press the Power Key to turn on your Pocket.

5. NLS digital books (on BARD service or cartridge)

    Yes. If you are an eligible reader of NLS, you can get digital talking books and magazines at the NLS Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) service web site. For more information, please go and see BARD service web site; https://nlsbard.loc.gov/.

    Do I need to apply registrations or authorizations in order to download NLS books and play them on my Pocket?

    If the attribute of the file is Read Only, it cannot be deleted. Please confirm the property of the file, and remove the check of Read Only attribute.

      Select PLEXTALK Pocket on NLS BARD service for authorization

      Case 1: For a person who does not have a username nor password of NLS BARD service:

      You have to get a username and password to login and access to NLS BARD service web site. First please go to the following web site.
      https://nlsbard.loc.gov/
      On this page, please select and jump to the link for the ‘BARD application instructions’ . If you have confirmed you qualify, please select the ‘link to the BARD application form’ on this page and you will move to this form page. On that form page, please select the library you are affiliated with from a dropdown box on this page then press or select Submit button, and you will move to another page. On that page, please enter necessary information for the application then please press or select the Submit button, and you will move to the page to select your player. On this page, please select PLEXTALK Pocket from the player list. Finally you will be approved. After that your username and password will be delivered by email from NLS. If there is a problem, you will receive a message explaining the problem.

      Case 2: For a person who have got a username and password of NLS BARD service:

      Please go to the following web page.
      https://nlsbard.loc.gov/
      On that page, please input your username and password and log in to NLS BARD service. On the following page, please select ‘Account Settings’ and register your PLEXTALK Pocket.

      Note: Some of your personal information will be sent and shared by us to be used only for key generation process.

      You will be contacted by us to start the key generation process.

      NLS will notify us that your PLEXTALK Pocket has been registered. After that, we will send email to you to ask for the serial number of your PLEXTALK Pocket. The serial number is needed to generate a unique key only for your Pocket. Please send email with the serial number, your name and so on.You can find the serial number of your Pocket by pressing the Menu Key on your device, choose ‘System settings’ and then ‘System properties’. The 12-digit serial number is announced after the system version. This System properties will be announced repeatedly. Even if you have missed to note it down, please keep announcing it and note it carefully. If you want to stop announcing, please press the Menu key.The serial number is also be printed on the label on the inside of the battery housing. Key will be delivered to you

      Once we have received email with the serial number, we will generate a key file and send it to you as a file attached to email. This email will tell you how to install the key. After the key installation, PLEXTALK Pocket will be able to play NLS books, magazines, newspapers you have got from NLS BARD service and transfer to the SD card on your PLEXTALK Pocket. Also you will be play books on NLS cartridge.

    I have registered for the BARD service and my Pocket has been authorized with a key. How can I get a book from BARD and play it on my Pocket?

    You can download a book or magazine on BARD service web site. But BARD service provides books or magazine as a zip file, and first you will have to extract a file on your computer, then copy the book or magazine in the zip file to your Pocket directly or to an SD card.
    1. Step 1: Download a file

      On NLS BARD web site at https://nlsbard.loc.gov/, please input your username and password you have received from NLS, then log in. After login, please select a book or magazine you want to read. When you press or select ENTER button, you will be asked how you get the book on your computer. Please press or select ‘Save’ , not ‘Open’ . The following box will ask you to specify a location where you want to save the book. Please choose the location and press or select ‘Save’ . Then your computer will start downloading a zip file containing the book you have chosen.

      Step 2: Unzip a file you have downloaded

      The NLS book or magazine is in a zip file you have downloaded. Please unzip this file on your computer. One of the ways to unzip it is just to double-click the file and a new window where the book or magazine is displayed will open.

      2. Please make a new folder on the removable disk. Your Pocket will recognize any folder names written in alphabets and/or numbers. Please copy the NLS book or magazine into this folder. This copy process may take some time. Note: PLEASE DO NOT COPY BOOKS OR MAGAZINES ON THE ROOT OF SD CARD. PLEXTALK POCKET CAN NOT PLAY THOSE CONTENTS. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO MAKE A NEW FOLDER ON SD CARD AND COPY THE CONTENTS INTO THIS FOLDER.
      3. After your PC complete to copy it, please remove this removable disk using Safely Remove Hardware provided on the Windows System Tray. After your PC announce you can safely remove it, please disconnect the USB cable from your Pocket and your Pocket will start to restart automatically.

    Can I read a book in a NLS book cartridge on PLEXTALK Pocket?

    Yes. First please make sure to authorize your PLEXTALK Pocket for NLS books as you read above. After that please just connect an NLS book cartridge to your Pocket by a short USB cable which came with your Pocket in a gift box as one of the standard accessories. Your Pocket will recognize and select a book in the cartridge as a USB media, so you can just press Play Key to read the book.

    Can I copy a book in a NLS cartridge to my Pocket?

    Yes. First please connect an NLS book cartridge to your PLEXTALK Pocket by a short USB cable which came with your Pocket in a gift box as one of the standard accessories. Your Pocket will recognize the cartridge as a USB media. Then please press the 9 Key. Your Pocket will start to back up the book into the SD card inserted in the Pocket.

6. Audible.com

    How do I play Audible.com books on my Plextalk Pocket? When I copy the books and try to play them they are not readable.

    Go to www.audible.com.

    At the very bottom of the Home page, select the link to “device center”.
    - Select the link for “other”.
    - In the drop down box for “Select Device Brand”, choose “Plextalk”.

    - Select the PLEXTALK Pocket and download/install the manager software.


    After purchasing your book and selecting “download” from “My library”, the Audible download manager will automatically launch and begin the download.
    Connect the Pocket to the PC. When the download is complete, it launches the AudibleManager interface.
    The Pocket should show up in the left lower pane of the manager software under “Mobile Devices”.
    The book will be in the top center pane.


    Either
    1) select the book and drag and drop to the lower pane,
    2) choose the “Device” drop down menu, select “Add to PTP1″ (Crtl+T), or
    3) select the book and press the “Add to device” button in the upper right of the manager screen.
    It should move the book to the lower pane. It is now in the Pocket Audible folder.

    The book is a single file and MUST be in the Audible folder. It ‘can’ be in a sub folder within the Audible folder if desired.

9. Supported formats

    My Pocket can not play an MS-Word DOCX file.

    The Pocket can not play a DOC file in the following cases:
    - the file is on a CD,
    - the SD card or the USB flash memory has little free space or
    - the SD card or the USB flash memory is locked.
    First copy the DOCX file to an SD card or a USB flash memory (thumb drive) that is unlocked and play that file.

    My Pocket can not play an MS-Word DOC file.

    The Pocket can not play a DOC file on a CD. Copy the DOC file to an SD card or a USB flash memory (thumb drive) to play.

    My Pocket can not play a WMA music file.

    The Pocket can not play WMA with digital rights management (DRM).

8. Wireless network connection

    How long can I operate the Pocket if I am connecting to the network folder?

    You can use up to 4 hours.

    How long can I operate the Pocket if I keep streaming web radio?

    You can use up to 4 hours.

    I want to know the IP address of my Pocket

    You can confirm the IP address at the "Confirm network information" option of the network setting menu.

    My Pocket does not select the desired access point.

    You can check with the list of available access points at the "wireless network setting" option of the network setting menu. If your Pocket does not find an access point, first confirm whether the network device is turned ON.When the access point is announced on the list, please check the priority of the access point. You can change the priority at the "Set highest priority and connect" option of the network setting menu.

    My Pocket failed to find an access point. I am using an access point that supports IEEE802.11a

    The Pocket only supports IEEE802.11b/g. If your access point cannot use IEEE802.11a and IEEE802.11b/g at the same time, please make the access point use only IEEE802.11b/g.

    My Pocket failed to connect to an access point. I am using non broadcasted SSID.

    Non-broadcasted SSID requires a litte time until the Pocket establishes a connection. Please wait about 5 minutes. When you change the setting of the access point to ‘broadcast the SSID name’ and you succeed in connecting, the problem may be in the non-broadcast setting. Otherwise, the wireless security setting may have incorrect settings.

    My Pocket failed to connect to an access point. I am using DHCP.

    The error may occur when:
    - a DHCP server on your home network or office network is not running
    - a DHCP server does not have available IP addresses to lend to your Pocket, or
    - Network connection time out has occurred before the IP address is sent from a DHCP server to your Pocket.
    Try the following steps.
  • Step1: Reboot the DHCP server.
    Step 2: Reboot the wireless router.
    Step 3: Restart your Pocket and try the connection.

    It failed to connect the access point. I am using MAC address filtering.

    If the MAC address filtering on the access point is enabled and the access point refuses your Pocket, you need to add the MAC address of your Pocket to the access point. You can get the MAC address of your Pocket at the "Confirm network information" option of the network setting menu.

    My Pocket always tries to connect to an SSID that is not available. I have configured Stealth SSID settings.

    When you have configured a network setting with Stealth SSID enabled. PLEXTALK always tries the connection to stealth (= non broadcasted SSID). Please set Stealth SSID access point to low priority in the list of wireless settings.

    The Pocket cannot connect to the network service. I am using WEP security with Fixed IP address.

    - you shut down your Pocket by the Power Key,

    - you have ejected the SD card, or – A network error occurs.

    We strongly recommend NOT ejecting the SD card during downloading. If you eject the SD card during downloading, the file entry of the SD card may be corrupted. Check the SD card by using Check disk function on your computer.

    How can I check the status of the downloading?

    You can check the status by pressing the 5 Key. You can hear the following information:
    - Name of the episode you are downloading
    - Progress of the downloading
    - Number of the remaining episodes and
    - Any errors on the downloading.

    My Pocket does not start downloading and announces the following error massage: "There is an episode that can not be downloaded."

    This error occurs in case a folder where your Pocket is going to save the podcast feed is located under 8 layers from the root or more, or in case the folder name is too long. Make the folder name shorter or move that folder to a less-layered folder.

    An error has occurred while your Pocket was writing data on the SD card and the downloading has been aborted. Delete downloaded episodes on the SD card and download it again. If the same error often occurs, replace the SD card.

    This error occurs when:
    Your Pocket has lost Internet connection for some reasons, or your Pocket does not communicate with the web radio server for more than 30 seconds for some reason. Please press the Play/Stop Key and try the streaming again.
